This month, we sat down with our advanced wound care specialist David Welch and Lorraine Kim to learn more about them! Dave and Lorraine are both extremely passionate about the advanced wound care line and bring over 60 years of combined experience in health care to our team!
Director, DUKAL Advanced Wound Care Division
Dave worked for Colonial Hospital Supply for 17 years before getting into wound care. He worked every department, starting out pushing a broom in the warehouse and working his way up through the company. His first advanced wound care job was with Carrington Laboratories, then Medline as a Wound and Skin Care Product Specialist. After Medline, Dave worked for CCS Medical as an on-site Regional Sales Manager, where he truly learned that there is a person behind that big ugly smelly draining wound that’s hurting. It sparked a fire that he didn’t understand before, and it’s what drives him now. Dave has been through several sales and marketing courses, including Dale Carnegie’s course on human relations and public speaking, Emory Universities abbreviated WOCN course for sales reps, Medline’s Educare advanced wound care training, and most recently, WCEI’s Certified Wound Care Marketing Specialist (CWCMS) training course. He originally went to school and obtained his certification as an auto body technician, but has now been selling advanced wound care dressings for over 20 years.
Wound Specialist, Clinical Support
Lorraine is celebrating her 30th year in the Healthcare Industry! She has toggled back and forth between working in sales and being a provider in an acute and post-acute settings. Both her undergrad and graduate degrees are in Business Management, with a focus on Healthcare Administration. She is a Certified Wound Specialist, American Board of Wound Management, an Allied Healthcare Professional, and an EMT, recently recertified. Lorraine met David Welch, Director of DUKAL AWC when she joined Carrington, which was then acquired by Medline Industries.
How long have you been with DUKAL and what is your current role?
David: I have been with DUKAL for 3 years, started as a Clinical Support Manager, then Director of Advanced Wound Care.
Lorraine: My one-year anniversary was this April! My current role is Wound Specialist, Clinical Support
Where do you live and why do you enjoy living there?
David: I live in Southern California, where there is no snow and the sun shines 95% percent of the time. I enjoy the weather and having access to so many different things to do.
Lorraine: Cincinnati, OH. My husband’s career moved us to Ohio as it is one of the largest regions for Aerospace and Manufacturing. Most of my neighbors are not from Cincinnati. What I enjoy most is the cultural diversity in our community.
What is your favorite DUKAL product and why?
David: The Eclypse range is my favorite. The reason why is because this product dramatically improves patients’ quality of life.
Lorraine: Eclypse, hands down! We have a unique story to share that everyone is fascinated by. It truly improves patient lives!
What is your favorite hobby?
David: Hiking, racing, training dogs, fixing cars, and reading my bible.
Lorraine: My favorite hobby is one I share with my husband – music. Music of all genres; he loves metal and I love Seattle grunge. When it comes to Trivia Night, you will want me on your team. Master Categories: Beatles, Hendrix, Joplin, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
What made you want to get into sales?
David: I enjoyed talking with and getting to know people.
Lorraine: I have always viewed my sales positions as that of an educator. Our customers are short on time and long on hours treating patients. I like to make my time with them like picking up their source journals; insightful and credible.
What motivates you?
David: This has changed for me over the years, but now, it is having the ability to provide a product that truly changes and improves people’s quality of life. It’s not about me, it’s not about sales, it’s about helping others and loving our neighbors. This is what’s important and I believe that sales will follow while focusing on what’s really important, helping people.
Lorraine: The patients and making our clinicians look like champions.
What makes you passionate about your job?
David: Knowing that with what we have to offer, patients can without question have a better quality of life.
Lorraine: That we can impact the lives of others so profoundly with innovation, and the fact that I have fun doing it! My customers’ energy and commitment reenergizes me daily.
Why do you think our products make a difference?
David: I have seen firsthand how they improve a patient’s quality of life.
Lorraine: The unique mode of action that our products have. Each of us can feel confident, when we make that appointment and ask for the time, that we have a valuable message to share. The patients that I have visited with and the clinicians that have applied our technology share their dynamic outcomes with us. We can and should walk in to each meeting with confidence.
What are three adjectives that you would use to describe yourself as a sales rep?
David: Passionate, honest, and knowledgeable
Lorraine: Kind, quirky, and passionate about WOUND CARE!!!! <3
